1 1/2" Roadbase Natural Gravel UDOT Spec

High-Quality Base Material for Strong Foundations

1 1/2" Roadbase Natural Gravel is a superior choice for creating a stable subbase layer, designed for use under paver sand, pavers, flagstone, brick patios, and more. Meeting the strict requirements set by UDOT (Utah Department of Transportation), this natural rock roadbase offers reliability and durability for a variety of construction projects.

Key Features:

  • Composition: A mix of crushed natural stone, fractured rock, sand, and soils, ensuring a well-balanced blend for high compaction and stability.
  • Particle Size: Consists of particles 1 1/2” and smaller, with finer materials helping to bind the larger stones, forming a firm, compact base.
  • Meets UDOT and APWA Specifications: This roadbase complies with the standards set by UDOT and APWA, making it ideal for both residential and commercial projects.

Benefits:

  • Exceptional Compaction: The mixture of coarse and fine particles ensures a high compaction rate, making it perfect for patios, driveways, roadways, and sidewalks.
  • Versatile Applications: Provides a durable foundation under asphalt, concrete, pavers, or flagstone, ensuring long-lasting stability for driveways, temporary roads, and house foundations.
  • Natural Composition: Unlike recycled alternatives, this roadbase is made from natural sand and gravel, offering a consistent and uniform product that excels in performance.

Ideal Use Applications:

  • Subbase for Driveways, Patios & Walkways: Offers a solid foundation that supports various top layers, including concrete, asphalt, and pavers.
  • Roads & Construction Projects: Perfect for use as a base material under roads, parking lots, and other heavy-duty applications that require a stable surface.
  • Backfill: A reliable option for filling trenches and other areas requiring a strong, compacted material.

Important Considerations:

  • Compaction Required: For optimal performance, it is essential to compact the material after laying it. Plan for a 1/4" reduction in depth per inch of material laid to account for compaction.
  • Surface Coverage: Without a top layer of asphalt or concrete, this material may be susceptible to moisture, which could cause the surface to become muddy.

Best Results:

For best results and to reduce weed growth, install base around 3" - 6" deep while compacting using a vibrating plate compactor and spraying with light amount of water while compacting. Typically you will see between 15% - 25% compaction when using a plate compactor. This compaction may require ordering additional material amount that standard coverages indicate.

  • Using a subgrade base material and properly compacting will help your project last going forward. This is especially important if you are installing a patio or concrete area, where sod or grass used to be as the soil there is not a well graded compactable material in most cases.
